1. What is Certified Mail™ ?
With Certified Mail™ you can be sure your article arrived at its destination with access to online delivery information. When you use Certified Mail™, you receive a receipt stamped with the date of mailing. A unique article number allows you to verify delivery online. As an additional security feature, the recipient’s signature is obtained at the time of delivery and a record is maintained by the Post Office™. For an additional fee, you can request a copy of the signature record before or after delivery with Return Receipt.

2. What is Registered Mail™ ?

Items you send with Registered Mail™ are placed under tight security from the point of mailing to the point of delivery, and insured up to $25,000 against loss or damage. And you can verify the date and time of delivery and the delivery attempts online. Registered Mail™  to Canada is subject to a $1,000 indemnity limit. To all other foreign countries, the indemnity limit is currently $40.45.

3. What is Collect on Delivery (COD) mail?

Any mailer may use the Collect on Delivery (COD) service to mail an article for which the mailer has not been paid and have its price and the cost of the postage collected from the recipient. If the recipient pays the amount due by check payable to the mailer, the United States Postal Service (USPS) forwards the check to the mailer. If the recipient pays the amount due in cash, the USPS collects the money order fee(s) from the recipient and sends a postal money order(s) to the mailer. The amount collected from the recipient may not exceed $1,000. COD service provides the mailer with a mailing receipt, and a delivery record is maintained by the USPS.

4. What is Insured Mail?
Security is key when you’re sending valuables through the mail. Whether you are sending jewelry, antiques or just expensive clothing, getting insurance provides that security. Insure your package only for what its contents are worth; you’re only covered for the actual value at the time and place of mailing.

5. What is Express Mail®?
Express Mail® is the fastest mail service offered by the Post Office™. It provides guaranteed expedited service for any mailable material. Express Mail® delivery is offered 365 days a year, including Sundays and holidays. Express Mail® packaging supplies (envelopes, boxes, tubes) are available for free from your local post office. If getting your mail there overnight is your highest priority, then Express Mail® is the best choice. Many businesses use First-Class Mail® for standard mail or for regular mailings and Express Mail® for important business documents, like contracts and sales orders.

  • Express Mail® rates are based on the weight of the piece, without regard for how far the piece travels.
  • Flat rate envelope: $14.40 is charged for anything mailed in the special flat rate envelope provided by the USPS, regardless of weight.

    6. Where can I buy United States postage stamps for my department?
    Stamps are available in the Student Center Building Suite 211. Please have you’re completed Postage Stamp Form accompany the request.  (Link to Postage Stamp Form.) 

    7. Where can I buy postage stamps and money orders for personal use?
    Stamps and money orders are available in the Student Center Post Office noon–4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

    8. How can I determine the cost of postage?

    9. Can I use a personal check, OneCard or credit card to purchase stamps
        and money orders?

    No, the WSU United States Post Office only accepts cash.

    10. Where can I mail personal packages and letters?
    The WSU United States Post Office will process all domestic personal packages and letters.

    11. Can I send an international package from the university post office?
    Since 9/11, packages and letters weighing more than 5 ounces must be processed through the United States Post Office. Packages and letters weighing less then 5 ounces can be processed through the WSU United States Post Office.

    12. How late can you accept USPS mail for same day processing/entry?
    The latest time for same day processing into the USPS mail stream is 3 p.m..

    13. Can I pickup my mail from the university mail center?
    Yes, it’s suggested you contact Mail Services to determine the best time to visit.

    14. Can I arrange for my department to have a second university mail
          delivery?

    Possibly, contact the Mail Services to discuss the needs.

    15. How do I do a USPS change of address, I live in a university residence
          hall?

    All change of addresses can be easily performed on line please visit

    16. What is a returned receipt?

    Return receipt provides a copy of the proof of delivery record via email when requested on line. This service is available for purchase at the time of mailing with Certified Mail, Insured Mail, Registered Mail and Collection on Delivery (COD) mail.

    17. What is the cost for a return receipt?
    Requested at time of mailing (receive by mail) $1.85
    Requested at time of mailing (receive electronically) $1.35
    Requested after mailing (receive by mail, fax or e-mail) $3.45

    18. Who should I use (vendor) to send a next day air letter or package?
    The university has a corporate agreement with United Parcel Service (UPS). The agreement provides a 40–60% discount on all services. UPS supplies and assistance are available by contacting the United Parcel Student Assistant (313) 577-3618.

    19. How late can I send a next day air shipment with United Parcel Service?
    The information is provided on every UPS drop box.

    20. Where around campus are the UPS drop boxes?
    You can locate the closest UPS drop box, process a shipment or request a pickup by visiting the UPS page

21. How can I get USPS supplies?
Go to: The Postal Store
Click on "my account"
Under new users click on the sign-up tab to create an account
Supplies are free of charge

22. What is Business Reply Mail® (BRM) and how do I request it?

Business Reply Mail® (BRM) uses preprinted First-Class Mail® pieces for which you, not your customer, pay the return postage. You are only charged for the pieces that are returned to the University.

 
To get started you will need to request artwork from the United States Postal Service. All artwork requests must be sent to Joyia Burgess at ab0316@wayne.edu or 577-8690 (fax).
 
Please provide the following information when requesting BRM artwork: 
 
  • Mail piece dimensions
  • Mail piece type (letter, flat, postcard)
  • Department name
  • Descriptive Line (if applicable)
  • WSU postage account and IRB numbers
  • Campus Delivery or Pick-up Preference

Please note: The address for all business reply mail will be the University’s mailing address. The mailing address for the University is 5057 Woodward (WSU Mail Department).

1-ounce letter price - 0.52 per piece*
1-ounce flat price – 0.96 per piece*
1-ounce parcel price – 1.30 per piece*
*$0.17 each additional ounce
Priority Mail prices apply for flats and parcels over 13 ounces
 

Standard Postcard price - .36 per piece
A standard postcard must be:
  • Rectangular
  • At least 3-1/2 inches high x 5 inches long x 0.007 inch thick
  • No more than 4-1/4 inches high x 6 inches long x 0.016 inches thick
If your postcard does not meet the dimensions above, then the Postal Service considers it a letter (and charges letter rate postage).
